Eye Exams & Tests
Pre-Testing
Prior to your routine eye exam, an assistant will perform several pre-testing procedures.
Included in these are: tonometry which measures the pressure inside your eye and is an
important indicator for diagnosing glaucoma, and auto refraction which gives a computerized
measure of your refractive prescription. If you are a new patient to our office, your current
eyeglasses will be measured so that the doctor will know what you have been wearing.
Routine Eye Exam
After being pre-tested, the patient will then be seen by the doctor for a thorough eye
examination. During the examination, many tests will be performed that will not only give the
doctor indicators into the patient's ocular health, but their general health as well. Some of
the tests that are done on a routine basis will evaluate your color vision, depth perception,
ocular muscle alignment, ocular tracking, peripheral vision, and visual acuity.
Evaluating Ocular Health
The doctors at Walkersville Eyecare have gone through extensive training to become skilled
at diagnosing and treating many ocular disorders. A routine exam includes an evaluation for
glaucoma, cataracts, dry eyes, and other diseases. We take great pride in the high-tech
instruments that we have incorporated into our practice. Some of our newest instruments
include Optos which is a camera that can scan a wide field of the back of the eye so that
using eye drops to dilate the pupil is not always necessary. The GDx is a different type
of camera that can detect glaucoma changes up to 5 years sooner than standard testing
procedures used in most other offices. The Humphrey Visual Field instrument assesses optic
nerve integrity and gives the doctor insight into neurological deficits. Our Pachymeter has
become an essential tool in glaucoma diagnosis as well as helping us to know if a person is
a good candidate for LASIK.
Contact Lens Exam
Contact lens technology has changed tremendously since they were first invented in 1947.
Many patients come to our office already wearing contact lenses or with an interest in finding
out if they are good candidates for wearing them. Our doctors take extra time to evaluate and
discuss contact lens issues so that proper ocular health is maintained. We are strong advocates
for disposable and frequent replacement contacts, and can offer these to many people even if
you have a lot of astigmatism or want them to replace your bi-focal glasses. Your ocular
health is the paramount concern of the doctors at Walkersville Eyecare.
LASIK Exam
The doctors at Walkersville Eyecare believe strongly in the benefits of LASIK. As such, we do
pre-op and post-op care of the LASIK patient while co-managing with the best surgeons in the
area. Feel free to call our office to schedule a no charge pre-LASIK consultation.
